No doubt now a days PHP is a powerful web language, but you should not fully depends on it. Whenever you want to develop websites you would use different language as per clients requirements. You should have also knowledge of ASP, ASP.NET and possibly Java as well, because these are more famouse than php.

PHP is probably not the very best language to create a desktop application with a graphical user interface, but if you know PHP very well, and would like to use some advanced PHP features in your client-side applications you can also use PHP-GTK to write such programs.

PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor. It is a server-side scripting language. PHP enable web pages are luxury just like regular HTML pages and you can create and edit them the same way you usually create regular HTML pages.
